The made-up chart

DAY 1DAY 10DAY 20DAY 30DAY 40

Illustrative: made-up data

Why the needle moved

Five indicators each vote +1, 0 or −1 on the latest made-up candle. The score is their average; the zone is just a label for the score.

  1. RSI (14)

    votes minus one

    78.4

Above 70 reads as overbought: buyers pushed hard in the last 14 days, so this row votes sell-ish (−1).

  2. Price vs 50-day average

    votes plus one

    +12.9% vs 50-day average

The latest close is more than 0.5% above its 50-day average, so this row votes buy-ish (+1).

  3. 20-day vs 50-day average

    votes plus one

    SMA20 +8.1% vs SMA50

The 20-day average has climbed above the 50-day average, the classic "trend up" shape, so this row votes buy-ish (+1).

  4. MACD vs signal line

    votes minus one

    MACD below signal

The MACD line is below its signal line, which momentum readers take as downward push, so this row votes sell-ish (−1).

  5. 10-day momentum (ROC)

    votes plus one

    +4.6% over 10 days

The close is more than 1% higher than it was 10 days ago, so this row votes buy-ish (+1).

Step forward 10 days

Add ten more made-up days and see what the price did after the dial spoke. Only this time: there is no running score, because the dial is not a forecast.

On made-up random data the dial can't know what comes next. Real markets add news, results and emotions that no dial sees. That's why we teach risk management first.

The lesson

What this dial can and cannot tell you

  1. 01

    What a technical rating is

A dial like this one adds up a handful of indicator votes (RSI, moving averages, MACD, momentum) into one score. It summarises the last few weeks of price moves. That is all it is.

  2. 02

    Why it flips

Every vote has a hard edge: an RSI of 69 votes 0, an RSI of 71 votes −1. One ordinary day of made-up prices can swing the needle from Neutral to Sell signal, and back again the next.

  3. 03

    Why ETA gives no signals

A rating describes the past. It cannot see tomorrow's news, company results or the mood of crores of people. ETA is education only: we don't give tips or calls. We teach you how tools like this one work, where they break, and why risk management comes first.
